    Main Reasons for the Decision

TEQSA has determined that the two higher education courses of study submitted by Melbourne Institute of Technology for accreditation comply with the Provider Course Accreditation Standards. The course accreditation covers delivery at all Australian sites.

The Delegate noted that although the courses of study were accredited without conditions, risks have been identified in relation to student attrition and progression.

The Delegate considered that these risks were adequately dealt with by the imposition of conditions on Melbourne Institute of Technology's registration as a higher education provider which can be viewed on the National Register.

  • Accreditation 18 July 2017

Provider: Engineering Institute of Technology Pty Ltd

Course: Master of Engineering (Civil: Transportation)

    Course accreditation

Report on accreditation of two higher education courses of study offered by Engineering Institute of Technology Pty Ltd

A delegate of TEQSA has accredited, under section 49 of the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency Act 2011 (the TEQSA Act), the following higher education courses of study offered by Engineering of Technology Pty Ltd for a period of seven years until 18 July 2024:

    • Master of Engineering (Civil Transportation)
    • Graduate Diploma of Engineering (Civil Transportation)

TEQSA has imposed, under section 53 of the TEQSA Act, two conditions on the accreditation of the Master of Engineering (Civil Transportation) and Graduate Diploma of Engineering (Civil Transportation):

    Condition 1:

By 31 December 2017 and not later than one month prior to delivery EIT must provide to TEQSA:

    • updated unit outlines with confirmed details of the assessment tasks(s) that will be undertaken by all students.
    • a report approved by the EIT Academic Board, which maps assessment tasks to unit learning and course learning outcomes.

TEQSA has imposed, under subsection 53(1) of the TEQSA Act, the following condition on the accreditation of the Master of Engineering (Civil Transportation):

    Condition 1:

Not later than one month prior to students commencing their Masters research thesis, EIT must provide to TEQSA a report that outlines name, qualifications, teaching and research experience and recent scholarship of the academic staff member proposed to supervise the Masters research thesis. The report should also detail the proposed thesis.

    Main reasons for the decision

The issues which led TEQSA to impose the conditions are:

    a) The courses' assessment tasks lack an emphasis on graduate attributes relating to group and team work and there is a risk that students will not acquire the necessary attributes and professional competencies ie. effective oral and written communication skills, team membership and team leadership.

    b) There is a risk in relation to the suitability of staff to supervise the Masters Thesis Unit (MCT700).

TEQSA's assessment considered Engineering Institute of Technology's arrangements for online delivery.

    Observation

It would be useful for Engineering Institute of Technology to benchmark more widely and deeply within similar courses offered in Australia.
