  • Accreditation 27 May 2026

    Provider: National Art School

    Course: Master of Fine Art (Research)

    Course accreditation

    Report on accreditation of one higher education course of study offered by National Art School

    On 27 May 2026, TEQSA:

    • accredited, under section 49 of the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency Act 2011 (TEQSA Act), the Master of Fine Art (Research) offered by National Art School, for a period of 7 years until 26 May 2033.
    • imposed, under section 53 of the TEQSA Act, one condition on the accreditation of the Master of Fine Art (Research).

    Condition 1: Learning outcomes and assessment

    Until TEQSA has advised that it is satisfied that this condition has been met, National Art School (NAS) must not advertise, market, promote, accept applications for, make offers of admission to, enrol, or commence delivery of the course to any student.

    NAS must demonstrate to TEQSA how it has assured itself that the course design has been scrutinised adequately and independently and subsequently assured itself that the course meets the Higher Education Standards Framework (Threshold Standards) 2021 (Threshold Standards). For TEQSA to be satisfied that this condition has been met, NAS must provide evidence satisfactory to TEQSA that:

    1. the course learning outcomes (CLOs) have been externally and independently reviewed and, where necessary, amended to ensure they are appropriately specified, aligned with AQF level 9 descriptors, and consistent with the level and field of education of the qualification;
    2. the unit learning outcomes (ULOs) and assessment tasks for each unit have been externally and independently reviewed and mapped to demonstrate alignment with the course learning outcomes, AQF level 9 descriptors and relevant Threshold Standards;
    3. the assessment methods are consistent with the learning outcomes being assessed and are capable of confirming that all specified learning outcomes are achieved at the unit and course level;
    4. the constructive alignment of the course has been externally and independently reviewed, including the relationship between CLOs, ULOs, learning activities, research training components, assessment tasks, grading criteria and course completion requirements;
    5. the external independent reviewer or reviewers have provided written reports, and post-amendment confirmation where relevant, addressing the matters in paragraphs 1 to 4;
    6. NAS's Academic Board, or equivalent peak academic governing body, has considered the independent review or reviews, approved any required amendments to the course and unit documentation, and recorded the basis on which it is satisfied that it has ameliorated the residual concerns TEQSA has raised in relation to Standards 1.4.1, 1.4.3, 1.4.4, 1.5.3, 4.2.5 and 5.1.3(a)-(b) of the Threshold Standards.

    The evidence provided must include, but is not limited to, final course documentation, unit outlines CLO/ULO mapping, AQF level 9 mapping, assessment mapping, independent reviewer report or reports, any post-amendment reviewer confirmation, and relevant Academic Board (or equivalent) papers, minutes and/or resolutions.

    Main reasons for the decision

    TEQSA made these decisions in light of residual concerns and associated future risk of non-compliance that the course submitted by National Art School may not meet the following provisions of the Higher Education Standards Framework (Threshold Standards) 2021:

    1. Standards 1.4.1, 1.4.3, 1.4.4 and 1.5.3 in relation to learning outcomes and assessment.
    2. Standards 5.1.3a, 5.1.3b and 4.2.5 in relation to course approval and academic governance.

    Application to withdraw conditions

    In accordance with section 53 of the TEQSA Act, TEQSA may vary or revoke a condition imposed on the accreditation of a higher education course of study, either on its own initiative, or upon application by the provider for variation or revocation.
