TEQSA will waive or reimburse fees and charges for registered providers

Update 25 November 2021: TEQSA fee relief arrangements extended until 31 December 2022

Minister for Education and Youth, the Hon Alan Tudge MP, has announced a further 12-month extension of regulatory fee-relief arrangements as part of a series of Australian Government initiatives to support the higher education sector’s recovery from the pandemic.

This means that TEQSA’s planned phased introduction of increased cost recovery will be delayed until 1 January 2023. TEQSA will continue to engage with providers during 2022 as we prepare to transition to increased cost recovery arrangements from 1 January 2023.

About TEQSA’s fee-relief extension until 31 December 2022

Excluded from these relief measures are TEQSA fees related to:

  • initial registration as a registered higher education provider
  • initial registration under the Education Services for Overseas Students Act 
  • initial accreditation of a course, where the applicant is not a registered higher education provider.*

Minister for Education and Youth the Hon Alan Tudge MP has announced a six-month extension of regulatory fee-relief arrangements as part of a package of targeted support for providers impacted by the pandemic.

The Minister has also confirmed that from 1 January 2022, TEQSA will begin a phased approach towards increased cost recovery.

23 April 2020

The Minister for Employment, Skills, Small and Family Business, Senator the Hon Michaelia Cash, and the Minister for Education, the Hon Dan Tehan MP on 12 April 2020 announced a package of measures to lift the financial pressures on higher education providers impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

As part of these measures, the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA) will:

  • waive fees and charges that have been invoiced since 1 January 2020, through 30 June 2021
  • reimburse any payments already made for invoices issued since 1 January 2020.

Excluded from these relief measures are TEQSA fees related to:

  • initial registration as a registered higher education provider
  • initial registration under the Education Services for Overseas Students Act
  • initial accreditation of a course, where the applicant is not a registered higher education provider.*

Invoices already issued for these services are excluded from fee relief and require payment in full. Payment of fees for these services will continue to be required.

The relief measures also include postponing TEQSA’s move to full cost recovery until 1 July 2021. TEQSA will consult stakeholders about changes to its fees and charges toward the end of 2020.
