How we use data
TEQSA collects data on all higher education providers to help inform our risk-based approach to regulation of the sector. Where possible, we utilise data already reported to government to minimise burden on providers. Where we require providers to report data or submit documents, we do so in accordance with the basic regulatory principles of:
- regulatory necessity
- reflecting risk
- proportionate regulation.
How does TEQSA collect data?
We collect data on higher education providers’ operations from a variety of sources, including:
Higher Education Information Management System (HEIMS)
Providers report their student and staff data to the Department of Education and Training’s HEIMS system.
HELP IT System (HITS)
Providers report their financial data on an annual basis to the Department of Education and Training’s HITS.
Provider Information Request (PIR)
Providers who do not report their student or staff data through the HEIMS system, or do not participate in QILT, report to the Department of Education and Training through the PIR data collection process.

Quality Indications for Learning and Teaching (QILT)
Data updated annually from QILT’s Student Experience Survey (SES) and Graduate Outcomes Survey (GOS)
TEQSA’s own regulatory activity
Information collected through the registration and registration renewal process, course accreditation and accreditation renewal process, CRICOS related assessments, material change notices, previous provider risk assessments, complaints and other intelligence provided by the general public, student, peak and professional bodies and other government agencies.
